For RWMF 2018, we engaged 46 volunteers to assist with Green Initiatives. A volunteers training session was held on the 12th of July, a day before the event. The training session touched on waste segregation procedures, the importance of recycling and food waste management, project plan, and etc. It included a brief walk-about around SCV. It is important to educate and train the Green Initiatives volunteers as they are the face of RWMF in conveying the message of sustainability to the festival goers.
Volunteers played a key role in ensuring the bins at the waste collection and segregation stations were segregated properly and guaranteed no contamination. The volunteers also helped to inform festival-goers on waste segregation and assisted them to segregate waste properly. These tasks gave the volunteers an opportunity to learn more about recycling and food waste management, apart from understanding the technical challenges of running a waste management project. They also learned to overcome challenges they face on-the-spot and to work in a collaborative environment.
We acknowledge the great need of having volunteered to make the green initiative a success. Having these volunteers creates a sense of green community and creates a chain of knowledge transfer. In recruiting local volunteers, we realized that it would have a greater impact as they would learn and understand a glimpse of Sarawak waste management and how they play a role in the whole system of waste management. Upon the end of the project, we sent out a survey for volunteers asking them to rate their knowledge on waste management before and after RWMF 2018. A total of 41 volunteers responded out of 46 volunteers that participated in the project.
Based on the survey responses, it can be concluded that RWMF volunteers gained a deeper understanding of recycling and food waste management, due to their participation in RWMF 2018. While we can measure direct impact through these volunteers, it is also important to note that through these volunteers, we also reached thousands of festival-goers that stopped by our waste stations to segregate waste.
