For every tree you plant, you plant hope for a future.
Sustainability Goal 13 (SDG13) of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasizes the urgent need to take action to combat climate change and its impacts. This goal focuses on strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards, integrating climate change measures into national policies and strategies, and improving education and awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
One of the most impactful ways to contribute to climate action is through tree planting. Trees play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, providing oxygen, and supporting biodiversity. By planting trees, we not only combat climate change but also plant hope for a sustainable future.
In conjunction with Borneo Jazz Festival (Miri) and Rainforest World Music Festival (Kuching), STB and Sarawak Forest Department began the tree-planting project in 2011 at the ecologically sensitive Kuching Wetlands National Park, a Ramsar Site. The tree-planting programme complements the festival’s conservation of endangered musical instruments, songs, and dances by raising awareness about conservation efforts and the ecological values of Sarawak’s rich and diverse flora and fauna. The festival has continued the annual tradition of mangrove tree-planting every year since 2011. The aim is to provide food for local wildlife while creating a buffer zone for coastal areas.
Over 1,700 trees planted from 2022 RWMF proceeds.
The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) continues to advance Sarawak Tourism Board’s agenda on Responsible Tourism through its ecoGreenPlanet programme.
Some 1,700 trees were planted on May 27th, 2023, as part of the programme with proceeds coming from sponsors, as well festival-goers at the 2022 edition of the Rainforest World Music Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival.
The sponsorship and participation by festival goers exemplifies how collective efforts can significantly propel environmental sustainability as these funds will be instrumental in enabling the tree-planting programme, contributing to the rejuvenation of the planet’s ecosystem.
EcoGreen Planet: Offsetting Carbon Footprint
Reviving the EcoGreen Planet initiative, STB has partnered with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation to launch a tree-planting project. This post-festival event, funded by a portion of ticket sales and sponsorships, is designed to offset the festival’s carbon footprint. The initiative not only mitigates environmental impact but also contributes to the reforestation and ecological health of Sarawak.
A Commitment to Responsible Tourism
Through these initiatives, the Sarawak Tourism Board underscores its unwavering dedication to responsible tourism. By promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, STB aims to create a positive impact on the community and the environment. The RWMF serves as a shining example of how festivals can embrace sustainability and lead the way in fostering a greener future.
Festival-goers are encouraged to participate in these green initiatives, helping to make the RWMF a model of sustainability and responsible tourism. Together, we can enjoy the music, celebrate the culture, and protect the planet. It’s a collective effort, where every small action contributes to a larger, more sustainable future.
